Yesterday I had the opportunity to attend Fashion Speak 2013, a one day conference created by the Detroit Garment Group Guild. The Detroit Garment Group Guild created Fashion Speak as a resource in an effort to help keep local fashion talent in Michigan.
The conference was broken down into six, 50 minute sessions where speakers talked about a wide range of topics including pop up retail, branding, fashion styling, social media, fashion public relations and fashion design.
April Boyle of D:hive gave attendees very valuable information and resources for business owners looking to open retail space in the city of Detroit, whether it be long term or a temporary pop up space.
Art Director Mark Zapico educated attendees on the importance of developing a strong brand identity and being consistent in one’s brand message. The main points from his presentation were: (1) great brands tell a story, (2) great brands create a legacy, (3) great brands value creativity and (4) great brands provide a seamless experience.
Celebrity stylist Chelsea von Mach provided attendees with tips on breaking into the fashion styling business. Her overall message to attendees was to build a team, constantly research and study the industry, build relationships, set goals and ask questions.
Attorney Michael Melfi spoke on the secrets to social media success. His overall message was to be consistent, predictable and reliable.
Aferdita Rakipi talked about the importance of fashion public relations. Her overall message: know your audience, know your brand and where you want to send it. Also, she expressed how important it is for one to get his/her brand into the right market in order to establish brand consistency.
The final speaker was fashion designer Daniel Vosovic. His overall message to attendees was to follow your dreams, build your network and be prepared to pay your dues. He also expressed how important it is to know one’s target audience and the importance of targeting the customer appropriate to one’s brand.
The Detroit Garment Group Guild set the bar pretty high with such a successful and informative event right out the gate. Hopefully this will be the first of many Fashion Speak conferences to come.
